Update Jan 17, 2021

"The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said about 10.6 million people have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine, and that about 1.6 million people had been fully vaccinated. That is far short of the goal federal officials set to give at least 20 million people their first shots before the end of 2020.

The federal government said Friday that it had delivered about 31.2 million doses to states, territories and federal agencies. The shipments, which came after a record-setting race to develop, study and approve a vaccine, have marked a turning point in the pandemic at a time when deaths and cases continue to set records.

But federal health officials recently acknowledged that the vaccine rollout had had a slower-than-expected start and said they did not have a clear understanding as to why only a portion of the doses shipped across the nation had made it into arms."

Every site that tracks Covid Cases and deaths have slightly different numbers.  The site below says that we now have over 400,000 deaths.  The US has a little over 4% of the world's population but almost 20% of total deaths and over 25% of new cases and total cases. Well played, America.

Oh, well, this too shall pass. Eventually

An Online Poll Conducted by our Congressman

An Online Poll Conducted by our Congressman Buchanan for Sarasota and Manatee County Jan 10, 2021.

1.8% of America Vaccinated So Far

The rate of vaccination has been slow, while we are at a very bad place with Covid hospitalizations and deaths. Only 1.8% of America has been vaccinated so far. The table below and the link to the article below show how many people have been vaccinated by State and territory.

Some of the problem is likely the lack of personnel to administer the shots. Many of the hospitals and health departments that are administering the vaccines are overwhelmed with the sick. This may be the problem in California and Arizona, which have a lower than average rate of vaccination.

The US should mobilize our military to help the States administer the vaccine. We have very experienced medical people who can work very hard and long hours to help administer the vaccine. Regular troops could help with administration and logistics.  The States should be contacted to find out if they need personnel and then provide that where possible.

Personal Impacts of Covid-19

Much of our assessment of the impacts of Covid-19 relate to our own personal experience.  The average person ( we are all well above average!) knows 500 to 800 people (various sources).  I suppose gregarious people know more people.

Covid-19 has killed over 1 in 1,000 Americans to date. So by random luck you may not know anyone who died from Covid or you may know one or more.  And of course this affects your assessment of the danger.

We know one person who died from Covid, and he was not a close friend.  My best Marine friend was intubated Nov 17, and totally sedated until a week ago. I talked to him last week for the first time - I talked - he could not talk, and his wife held the phone to his ear.

Yesterday he could actually talk - not well - but was rational.  So for the first time we are hopeful he will make it.  His health will likely be very impacted, however.

Same day the father of a good friend died from Covid.

Stay safe everyone.  And be careful! This too shall pass.

Nations With The Most Deaths Per Million People

Covid-19 is a very weird disease. The table below is ranked by deaths per million.  New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts were hit first and very hard and still have the highest deaths per capita.  The next worse is currently North and South Dakota - states that are very rural and did not get hit badly until later.

The Day After Christmas

The graphs above show data from the world. It is clear that the Pandemic is worsening substantially. And because the number of cases in increasing very rapidly, it is very likely that the death rate will also increase very rapidly.

The table below is taken from data from countries around the world. The USA has the 7th highest number of total cases per million people among the world's nations. And the countries with a higher rate are quite small, in some cases really city states, which because they live at a higher density are also likely to have more cases.

Some of the lower death rate can be attributed to our better more sophisticated health care system. But our number of cases is are going way up and is a leading indicator for deaths, which will likely follow the increase in cases.

Good News - Bad News

We have Good News and Bad News about Covid. Sort of.

My table below:

As of Dec 15, 2020USAWorldUS Percent
Population328,000,0006,800,000,0005%
Total Covid Deaths303,9681,680,00018%

New Deaths Dec 152,95713,22822%
New Cases Dec 15201,649611,74933%

The Bad News

The USA, affluent and well educated and with some of the best health care in the world, has a much higher percent of Covid cases and deaths than our percent of the world population.

The Good News

The world is not in as bad a shape as the USA.

Why?  Lots of reasons, but In my judgement inept leadership is near the top.
